22 1 An unbelievable range of urban images comes together in Düsseldorf: flocks of sheep against the glistening metal of the Gehry Buildings, or the EKŌ House, a Japanese cultural centre with a Buddhist temple, in the middle of the Niederkassel residential district. It’s amazingly colourful on Kiefern strasse, too – and not only because of the façades covered in street art. A squatter stronghold in the 1980s, citizens of up to 45 countries live together here in an entirely self-contained cultural community. DÜSSELDORF IS DIVERSE. THAT’S WHY IT’S SO LOVABLE.
