The director of KIT, Gertrud Peters, talks about what it is like living in Düsseldorf’s Old Town, where the best exhibitions are and where you can find the best coffee in the city.

How long have you lived in Düsseldorf and what do you do here?

For a very long time! 😊 I have been the artistic director of KIT - Kunst im Tunnel since 2007.

What is your favourite cultural venue in town? 

The KIT, of course, and the Kunstpalast museum.

Any landmark or place that you particularly love to show visitors?

The Rhine promenade.

Is there a piece of art or music that embodies Düsseldorf for you?

‘Hier kommt Alex’ by Die Toten Hosen.

Is there a museum or gallery that you have always wanted to see, but you haven’t found the time yet?

No, I have already visited them all.

What cultural institution in and around Düsseldorf would you recommend?

Langen Foundation in Neuss.

Which artist from Düsseldorf’s rich cultural history would you like to be able to have a chat with?

Mutter Ey.

What is your architectural highlight of Düsseldorf?

The Schauspielhaus theatre.

Which neighbourhood of Düsseldorf is your favourite part of town and why?

The Old Town! I have lived and worked here for 30 years and love its villagey feel.

Who makes the best coffee in town?

Rösterei Vier on the market square and on Wallstrasse.

And what is your favourite place for a dinner out with friends?

San Leo on Wallstrasse.

Your favourite bar?

The Eiskeller wine bar opposite the Academy of Arts.

And where is the best place to get a pure taste of Düsseldorf?

Am Bolker Stern and Königsallee – you see so many stark contrasts here, but it is all part of Düsseldorf life for the locals.

Where do you go to relax?

The other side of the river Rhine – to count sheep!

What would be your pick for a souvenir to take home from Düsseldorf?

ABB mustard and Heinemann champagne truffles.

Which hotel would you recommend to out-of-town guests?

ART Hotel Ufer or the Steigenberger – depending on the budget.
