Faces of the hotel industry

THE DORF as a guest of Marc Buschhüter from THE WELLEM

The luxury boutique hotel THE WELLEM in the Andreas Quarter captivates with unique design in a historic ambience. The highlights are the original artworks by renowned artists in the modern rooms. Located in the middle of the old town, you can still enjoy the peace and quiet in the well-insulated courtyard. In an interview with THE DORF, Marc Buschhüter, the Director of Sales, tells us more about the great dining offer, live music, and how the Justitia in the entrance hall ensured a rosy future.

The facts:

  • THE WELLEM at 34 Mill Street
  • Our interview partners: Marc Buschhüter, 35
  • since May 2016 working in the hotel as Director of Sales

Marc, describe your day-to-day work - what are your tasks?

My team and I are responsible for customer acquisition and retention. We are looking for new cooperation partners. We develop new strategies to make THE WELLEM known.

How would you describe your typical hotel guest?

We have many different guests. From business travelers who appreciate the size of the studios and suites for work, to art enthusiasts who enjoy the proximity to cultural institutions, to guests who need a new home for several weeks.

What is special about your house?

We offer the largest selection of outlets with six different restaurants and bars. The bar is the heart of Andreas Quartier and spreads a great atmosphere due to its location in the listed part with original art and live music. The restaurants offer everything from steaks to Mediterranean cuisine and seafood to fine dining - a selection where every guest will find something delicious.

We are located in the middle of the city center, the Kö is only five minutes away for shopping, the K20 on the other side of the street and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Tonhalle or the house breweries are all within walking distance.

What else makes your hotel stand out?

The mixture of location, size and equipment of the studios and suites and the personal, uncomplicated service is characteristic for us. We are in the middle of the city center, the Kö is only five minutes away for shopping, the K20 is across the street and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Tonhalle or the house breweries are also all within walking distance.

What special anecdote will you never forget?

Shortly after the opening, I took a small group of Düsseldorfers on a tour of the hotel and the Andreas Quartier. As we stood on the large, freestanding staircase, one of them smiled while looking at the Justitia. When I asked why she was smiling, she replied, "I have very good memories of the court - this is where I got rich."

Why can guests feel safe with you especially in Corona times?

We place a very high value on safety. We test our team twice a week, there are contactless disinfection dispensers everywhere, the rooms are entered and cleaned exclusively with a medical mouth-nose mask. All contact surfaces are disinfected several times a day. After cleaning, our rooms are not occupied for 24 hours.

What does the future hold?

We are looking positively into the future. For meetings, we will convert our lounge into a modern meeting room.

What would you recommend to someone staying in Düsseldorf for a day and a night?

A stroll along Königsallee, a glass of wine on Carlsplatz, an Altbier at at least one of the breweries and a visit to K20.

What does your personal perfect day in Düsseldorf look like?

After a nice breakfast, I like to stroll along Lorettostraße and return for lunch. In the afternoon I visit one of the exhibitions. In the evening I meet friends in one of the restaurants and maybe there will be a little pub crawl. We end up staying until early in the morning in one of the great clubs of the city.

Typical Düsseldorf for you?

The hospitality, Altbier, joy of life and enjoyment.

What is your favorite place in Düsseldorf?

The rose garden, which is a bit hidden. Great for recharging your batteries.

What is your favorite event in the village?

The Jazz Rally and Japan Day. At both events you meet so many interesting people and they are right in front of the hotel!

Düsseldorf in three words:

Close, friendly, cosmopolitan.
