Cranach. Meister Marke Moderne
Thursday, 20.06.2017
Museum Kunstpalast
    Lucas Cranach der Ältere

If he had lived in the present day, Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472–1553) could probably have called himself Martin Luther’s PR Manager or something similar. But Cranach was a Renaissance man, both figuratively and literally, and was active around 500 years ago as a painter, graphic artist and book printer, as well as a politician and businessman.

Cranach is considered to be one of the greatest and most versatile European artists of the 16th century. Today, around 1,500 paintings by him and his workshop are still extant – probably only a fraction of the actual works produced. These are mainly portraits of court, bourgeois and clerical patrons. Cranach also influenced the image we have of Martin Luther, with whom he enjoyed a close friendship. In his workshop Cranach printed Reformation tracts and Luther’s translation of the New Testament. And he transported Reformation thinking into his paintings, prints and drawings thus helping it to spread. Such works include his painting “Christ and the Adulteress” which was based on St. John’s Gospel, in which the sinner receives God’s mercy even without buying an expensive indulgence from the Roman Catholic church.

During the 2017 Reformation anniversary year, the Museum Kunstpalast is devoting an exhibition to the famous Wittenberg painter, “Cranach. Meister – Marke – Moderne”, which will run from 8 April to 30 July. Around 250 works will be on show, some from private collections and never yet seen by the public. In addition, there will be high-calibre exhibits from international museums on display, including the life-size “Venus” from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and the “Prague Altarpiece” whose widely-scattered parts are being brought together for the show. The exhibition covers the entire spectrum of Cranach’s work, showing him as an innovative 16th century painter who also influenced 20th century artists including Pablo Picasso, Otto Dix and Andy Warhol.
