METRO Marathon Düsseldorf
Sunday, 30.04.2017
Start/Ziel: Rheinuferpromenade
    Rheinisches Flair auf 42,195 Kilometern

When the German long-distance runner Julian Flügel ran the Berlin Marathon in 2:13:57 in January 2016, it looked as if he had a ticket for the Rio Olympics firmly in his grasp. But then the METRO Marathon Düsseldorf took place, and Flügel was kicked off the national Olympic team by his rival Hendrik Pfeiffer who ran the marathon in 2:13:11 in April last year. Ultimately, however, Flügel was able to run in Rio after all – Pfeiffer having withdrawn because of injury – but because he hadn’t had sufficient preparation, Flügel placed only 71st in a field of 155 runners.

And the positive side of all this confusion: Düsseldorf seems to be a fast route, so Flügel will be on the start line of the 15th METRO Marathon on 30 April. Explaining his participation, Flügel says: “I want to run fast, and Hendrik has shown us that this is possible in Düsseldorf.” He goes on to add: “My focus this season is on running two fast marathons and beating my best time.” Another reason may well be that the native of Hesse switched to the ART (Allgemeiner Rather Turnverein) Düsseldorf in January, so the marathon is now a home game.

A total of around 17,000 competitors are expected to take part in the running event, distributed across three races: the 42.195 km marathon, the corporate relay with distances between 8.6 and 11.3 kilometres, and the Kids Cup. Entries can be submitted until mid-April at

So that all of the runners reach the finish line with élan, the organisers have significantly boosted the musical entertainment along the route. More than 40 bands from Düsseldorf and the surrounding areas will be cheering the athletes on their way. Race director Jan Winschermann says: “There will be everything from German rock to rock ‘n’ roll, folk rock and pop to Japanese drums.” As usual, several samba bands will be on hand to liven up the mood.
