It is pure chance that the NoGravity Dance Company is able to present the German premiere of its astonishing dance evening “Aria” at the “düsseldorf festival!” Christiane Oxenfort, one of the two festival directors was sent a short video of the performance via Facebook, accompanied by the comment: “Isn’t this something for the ‘düsseldorf festival!’? I’d love to see that.”

Although Oxenfort says that she usually deletes items like this immediately, she was curious, looked at the video, and flew to Krakow where the group was giving a guest performance. The result: on 13 September the NoGravity Dance Company will be opening the “düsseldorf festival!” at the Theatre Tent on Burgplatz on 13 September with their seemingly weightless dance set to baroque arias.

Continuing until 2 October, this premiere will be followed by 36 productions in the areas of music, dance, theatre and nouveau cirque, most of which blur the boundaries between the various art forms. The best example of this is provided by the Canadian artistes who make up “Les 7 doigts de la main”. For their German premiere “RÉVERSIBLE” (30.09–02.10, Theatre Tent) they immerse themselves in the lives of their forebears using theatre, music, circus, humour and acrobatics. Even the stage scenery plays an active part – wobbling, dancing, and allowing a glimpse inside it.

Eun-Me Ahn, one of Korea’s most innovative choreographers, is known for her eccentric and provocative pieces. As a European premiere, the “düsseldorf festival!” will be presenting the first part of her new trilogy “Different People” on 26 and 27 September at the Theatre Tent. In this piece, seeing and blind dancers use body language to tell a story about the state of being different.
