    Description
Musical von Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice

Evita Perón, whose full name was María Eva Duarte de Perón, had a short but intense life. As the illegitimate daughter of a provincial family, the Argentinian started her social ascent as an actress, eventually becoming the influential wife of the President, Juan Perón. In this role she championed the poor and drove the introduction of women’s right to vote. The people loved her for this dedication, tolerating her contradictory and openly-displayed luxurious lifestyle. Evita Perón died of cancer in 1952 at the age of 33.

Impressed by this rags-to-riches story, the British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice created the musical “Evita” in the 1970s which had its premiere in London’s West End and was taken to New York’s Broadway a year later. The piece has since become one of the most famous musicals ever and “Evita” was filmed in 1996 with Madonna in the title role.

The West End production starring Emma Hatton will be staged at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein from 18 to 23 July. The musical depicts the various stages of Evita Perón’s life and also shows the contradictory facets of the Argentinian who has been transformed into an icon. To do this, Lloyd Webber and Rice provided their heroine with an opponent who, as a critical observer, delivers biting comments on this ambitious woman’s career.
