Xerxes (Georg Friedrich Handel)

17., 19., 23., 26., 29., 31.01.2019, 19.00 hrs. / Opera House Düsseldorf

In Georg Friedrich Handel’s opera the Persian King Xerxes’ campaigns of conquest are not directed at foreign territories but at a woman he cannot possess. The beautiful Romilda remains faithful to his brother Arsamene and denies the King her favours. Xerxes’ tactics, which he changes as often as his opulent costumes, allow his opponents little time to rest. This results in a “baroque Muppet Show,” as the celebrated Norwegian director Stefan Herheim describes his spectacular stage production, which begins with Xerxes’ famous aria “Ombra mai fu” and after a bewildering series of games of love and intrigue ends with the insight that life is a theatre in which one cannot always choose one’s own role.
