Pierre Cardin. Fasion Futurist.
The French fashion designer Pierre Cardin (*1922) is regarded as a fashion futurist and pioneer of prêt-à-porter fashion.
The couturier’s approach is that of a sculptor: His designs are governed by the notion of plasticity. His geometric formal vocabulary and three-dimensional designs remain distinct and instantly recognizable to this day. The Kunstpalast will be presenting the first major exhibition in Germany dedicated to the internationally renowned fashion designer. The show offers insights into Cardin’s vast creative world, encompassing clothing and accessories from the 1950s to the 2000s, sketches, photographs and film footage.
Cardin made a name for himself in the world of fashion with his provocative, futurist collections, which were strikingly form-fitting and youthful. Using new materials such as plastic, vinyl and artificial leather, his fashion designs with their bold colours and trendy cuts stand for a new, more liberal outlook on life.
To this day, Pierre Cardin is the sole owner of his enterprise founded in Paris in 1950. Alongside his fashion label, he developed an increasingly broad product range in the 1970s, encompassing mineral water, bicycles and skis through to jewelry and furniture. Even his early designs demonstrate how he turns sophisticated creations into popular fashion.
