The Sound of Düsseldorf – Walk along the SoundLabs of NEU!, Kraftwerk and DAF

Since summer 2019 Visit Düsseldorf’s programme has included “The Sound of Düsseldorf – Iconic music venues and their songs”. This popular walk from the Dreischeibenhaus to the Mannesmann high-rise is themed around the city’s great musical legacy. In November 2020 the two guides, Sven-André Dreyer and Dr. Michael Wenzel, added a digital version: a live video walk for the large community of English-speaking fans of “The Sound of Düsseldorf”. The premiere of this online experience took place exclusively as part of “die digitale”, Düsseldorf’s leading festival for contemporary digital art and music and now is available to book. The idea: at the weekend, virtual guests spend an hour strolling through Düsseldorf’s Altstadt (Old Town) – live, and with Dreyer and Wenzel as their guides. In these unusual times, that gives viewers a chance to visit the city on the river without ever having to leave the house.

The story: Time and again, Düsseldorf has produced influential and successful pop music. Musicians, artists and other creative minds have been coming together in the Altstadt (Old Town) for the last 50 years, starting up bands and influencing each other. Where do the electronic pioneers Kraftwerk have their roots? Where did DAF first learn about electro-punk? And which DJs are now spinning discs at the world-famous Salon des Amateurs. The digital pop music guided tour “The Sound of Düsseldorf” visits legendary clubs and pubs. The guides, Sven-André Dreyer and Dr. Michael Wenzel, are local music journalists who published the definitive book “Keine Atempause – Musik aus Düsseldorf”. Naturally, during the walk you’ll also get to hear the most important tracks “Made in Düsseldorf”.
