The guided walk starts at what is today the Robert-Schumann-Institute on Bilker Straße, once one of Schumann’s four residences in Düsseldorf, and continues via the Max and Lambertus churches to the very spot by the river Rhine were Robert Schumann attempted suicide on carnival Monday in 1854.

The eventful history of the Schumann family and their life in Düsseldorf is told by reference to many places, and biographical facts as well as numerous compositions created in Düsseldorf will be mentioned and discussed.

Tour guide will be the renowned Schumann specialist Dr. Irmgard Knechtges-Obrecht. Following her studies of history and music, drama, film and TV sciences at Köln University, Irmgard Knechtges-Obrecht did her Ph.D. on the subject "Robert Schumann in the mirror of his later piano works". She has been working as a scientific assistant of the Robert-Schumann-Society in Düsseldorf since 1986.
