The municipal libraries in Düsseldorf (Stadtbüchereien) consider themselves to be service providers in the information sector. They contain a total of over 800,000 media items, achieving around five million loans per year.

Alongside the Central Library, thirteen branch libraries, the Children’s and Young People's Library in Hassels and the "Bücherbus" mobile library are also part of the public library network. In addition, the "onlineBibliothek" on the Internet is open to library customers around the clock to download a wide range of e-books, e-papers, e-audios and e-videos. At each of these locations, the Düsseldorf municipal libraries provide accessible, up-to-date and future-oriented information, education and media services for private, educational and professional use.

Staging around 600 events every year, the municipal libraries enrich cultural life in Düsseldorf. Particular emphasis is placed on cultural activities at district level, in which the many local libraries play a central role. Here, residents can experience "culture on the doorstep", enjoying readings, exhibitions, talks and musical events at venues reachable on foot and without parking problems. Admission is usually free.
