A branch of Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the largest dance company in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Ballett am Rhein can be seen both at Düsseldorf’s Opernhaus and in the Theater Duisburg.

Since the 2009/10 season, the company has been dancing under the direction of ballet director and chief choreographer Martin Schläpfer, who very quickly managed to captivate both experts and the audience. After only one season, he was voted “Choreographer of the year 2010” by Europe’s leading dance magazine “tanz”, which praises “the high degree of musicality of his contemporary ballet and his desire to push beyond mediocrity”. The 48-strong company is hailed as “a magnificent ensemble of individualists”, Martin Schläpfer as a “choreographer, who represents the mutable with an uncompromising attitude: the seeking and the variability of artistic creations” (tanz – das jahrbuch 2010).

Simply numbered consecutively, the densely and grippingly composed ballet evenings (b.06, b.07, b.08,  …) see choreographies by Martin Schläpfer alongside works of such outstanding choreographers as George Balanchine, Mats Ek, Hans van Manen, Jiri Kylián, Nils Christe, Paul Lightfoot und Sol León or Regina van Berkel. Titles like b.02 or b.09 disguise full-length ballets such as Schläpfer’s “Kunst der Fuge” (The Art of Fugue) or “Ein deutsches Requiem” (A German Requiem).
