Art and Culture in Düsseldorf

Art in Düsseldorf: Between tradition and avant-garde

From the art academy to the "Museum Kunstpalast", from Heinrich Heine to the literature telephone. Be it something modern of world standing, opera, theatre, literature or music: Düsseldorf is always good for new aspects of culture.

The roots of Düsseldorf as a city of art reach far back into the past: through his commitment as a generous patron and sponsor of the arts, Jan Wellem launched Düsseldorf's development as a modern major city over 300 years ago. The outstanding collection of art that he built up with his second wife Anna Maria Luisa de'Medici resulted in Düsseldorf gaining a European-wide reputation as a centre of culture. Since then, the city of Heine and Schumann has always had its finger on the pulse of the culture of the times.
